Associate in Arts, Liberal Arts and Sciences

Bedford Campus and Lowell Campus - Day and Evening

Program Description:

Students in the Literature Concentration Associate in Arts, Liberal Arts and Sciences degree program are prepared for transfer to a college or university.  This academic concentration provides students with a foundational understanding of the British and American literary traditions that make English studies a coherent and valuable focus within a liberal education. This program qualifies for MassTransfer  , which guarantees credit transfer to Massachusetts state universities and the University of Massachusetts. Advisors and transfer counselors work with students to assist with course planning based on the interests of the student and the requirements of the intended transfer institution.

Career and Transfer Outlook:

Most students in the Literature Concentration continue their studies towards a bachelor’s degree.  Students should check the requirements of the transfer institution and meet with career and academic/transfer counselors at MCC and at the transfer institution for specific program planning. Students may pursue various careers in media, public relations, customer service, publishing and teaching.

Helpful Hints:

Students who wish their program to transfer to UMass Lowell without having to take additional courses to meet graduation requirements there must take the Lab Science Option for the Liberal Arts and Science Degree in this configuration:  One Lab Science course and One Non-Lab Science Course.

Students who wish their program to fit seamlessly within the UMass Lowell Literature Option must either take four semesters of World Language here at MCC, or two semesters here and two at their intended UMass transfer campus. Currently, MCC offers more options here than some UMass campuses, so students should be advised to study a language here that has subsequent courses at the UMass campus of their choice in order to have the greatest flexibility.

Salem State-bound students will need to take 2 literature courses from different time periods as a breadth elective requirement for transfer.

Program Outcomes:

Graduates of the Literature Concentration will achieve the learning outcomes of the Liberal Arts and Sciences  degree. Additionally, graduates will be able to:

  • Articulate a beginning understanding of and appreciation for the literary traditions of both British and American Literature.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of the elements of analytical writing about literature.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of fiction, poetry, and drama from one or more critical perspectives.
