EDU 104 - Exceptional Learners

Course Description: The course will be a study of children (birth through age 16) with physical, social, emotional, and/or intellectual exceptions, with an emphasis on techniques for inclusion of children into early childhood and elementary school programs. This course offers an introduction to a broad range of developmental exceptionalities and related topics, including categories of cognitive, physical, emotional, and learning delays. Topics include the history of special education, impacts on families, current and future trends, early intervention, transition, and the laws which govern the integration of children and adults in society.
Prerequisite(s): Eligible for ENG 101.
Corequisite(s): IDS 122
Note(s): In order for a student to be eligible to participate in an academic, community or clinical program that involves potential unsupervised contact with children, the disabled, the elderly, or other vulnerable populations, the student may be required to undergo a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check and/or a Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI)

Students who have previously taken PSY 123 do not need EDU 104. Any student who has not taken this sequence should take EDU 104 as PSY 123 has been removed from the program.
