Liberal Studies: Health Science Career


Program Description:

The Health Science Career option is designed for students interested in a health career, or who have completed health science course credits in an associate degree program or a certificate in a health program, and are seeking to be employed in entry-level health positions.  This program requires a minimum of 15 credits to be completed in health science courses.  Students who have completed a certificate in a health program will also be eligible to obtain an industry-recognized certification.   The Health Science Transfer option is designed for students interested in a health career, or who have completed health science course credits in an associate degree program or a certificate in a health program, and are interested in transferring to a four-year institution to continue in an allied health program.  This program requires a minimum of 15 credits to be completed in health science courses.

Career and Transfer Outlook:

Students who complete the career option would be eligible to be employed in an entry-level health position.   Students who complete the transfer option would be eligible to transfer to a 4-year institution to continue their studies in an allied health degree program.

 

Helpful Hints:

Health science course refers to courses in any of the following areas:  AHP, DAS, DHY, DLT, MAS, MLT, NUR, RAD, or SON.

Many health science courses are restricted to students accepted into a specific health degree or certificate program.  MAS 101 (Medical Terminology) and several AHP courses are open to students not enrolled in a specific health program.

 

 

Program Outcomes:

Graduates of the Liberal Studies Health Science option will achieve the outcomes of the Liberal Studies degree.  Additionally, graduates are prepared to:

* Identify skills and knowledge necessary for a health care worker;

* Apply critical thinking and problem solving skills in healthcare environments;

* Demonstrate professional and ethical work habits as they apply to health care environments;

* Exhibit interpersonal and communication skills with patients, peers, other health care personnel, and the public;

* Recognize the impact of different cultures in the healthcare environment;

* Be employed in entry level health areas.
