Dental Laboratory Technology Certificate

Program Description:

The Dental Laboratory Technology Certificate program offers a curriculum composed of didactic and laboratory experience. Courses include content in dental materials, oral anatomy, occlusion, history and ethics in dental laboratory technology, as well as the study of infectious diseases. The extensive laboratory component covers all phases of dental technology: partial dentures, complete dentures, crown and bridge, ceramics, and implants. As a result of this experience, students acquire skills in various manufacturing methods for model making, waxing patterns, casting, pressing, digital scanning, digital designing, ceramic application and implant technology, as they pertain to all the major areas of dental technology. The dental laboratory technology certificate prepares graduates to assume a professional role in the dental health delivery system and perform laboratory techniques and procedures in dental laboratories or dental offices. 

 

Career and Transfer Outlook

Students will find career opportunities in dental laboratories, dental schools and dental offices throughout New England. With a certificate in Dental Laboratory Technology the student may continue in the Dental Laboratory Technology degree program to complete the AS degree where the general education credits will transfer to other colleges.

To be successful in this program, students should be able to work with small hand-tools on various dental materials with precision and accuracy.

Program Outcomes:

Graduates of the Dental Laboratory Technology Certificate program are prepared to:

  •   Demonstrate competence in the fabrications of removable and fixed prostheses;
  •  Perform all related procedures at a commercial level;
  •  Practice within the legal and ethical framework of the profession;

*Special Requirements for Dental Laboratory Technology Certificate: Students must receive a "C" or better in all courses within the area of specialization to remain in the program. Additional coursework may be required based on college placement testing. Students are urged to meet with their academic advisor for proper course sequencing.

Students enrolled in the Dental Laboratory Technology program must demonstrate a satisfactory level of performance in clinical settings in order to remain in the program.

Required Admission Prerequisites

 

 

  • Completion of high school or college chemistry
  •  Eligible for ENG 088, or ENG 089, or ENG 092 or above.  Eligibility may be demonstrated through placement, current enrollment, or previous college coursework.

  • Eligible for Algebra I or Module 5 in Preparation for College Math, or above.  Eligibility may be demonstrated through the college placement test or previous coursework.

Admission Notes: Preference is given to Massachusetts residents.

Deadline: Priority consideration is given to applications, including all requirements, received by May 1. Applications received after the deadline date will be considered on a space-available basis.

Requirements After Admission to Dental Laboratory Technology Certificate:

Students must submit the Student Health Record form, provided by Middlesex Community College, to the Student Information Center. Required documentation of health status includes a completed physical examination, a two-step Mantoux (TB/PPD) skin test or blood test (T-Spot or Quantiferon Gold) for tuberculosis, a color deficiency test, proof of immunization against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella, Meningitis, and one lifetime dose of TDAP (Tetanus/Diphtheria/Acellular Pertussis - after 2006). Most programs also require seasonal flu vaccine.
