Program Description:
The Medical Office Administration Certificate program in the Academy of Health Professions is designed as a continuation for students who have completed the Medical Receptionist Certificate program. The Medical Office Administration Certificate program consists of 18 college credits, including both academic and career courses. The objective of this medical office administration program is to provide the students with the skills to perform a variety of administrative health information functions, including those associated with organizing, analyzing, and technically evaluating health insurance claim forms and coding diseases, surgeries, medical procedures, and other therapies for billing and collection.
Career and Transfer Outlook:
Medical office administrators usually obtain employment in physician’s offices, clinics or hospitals. They may also work in laboratories, insurance companies and nursing homes. Hours are usually day or evening, and may include weekends.
Graduates of the Medical Office Administration Certificate program are qualified for entry-level employment as administrative staff in a variety of health care locations. Students may find career opportunities in long-term care facilities, hospitals or clinics, or group or individual physician’s offices. Graduates of this program will be able to move up the career ladder by taking additional college-level courses and meet requirements for other certificates or associate degrees in a health career.

Program Outcomes:
Graduates of the Medical Office Administration Certificate program are prepared to:
- Successfully complete AAPC certification exam. Provide optimal, professional services expected by patients and employers while performing required administrative duties as they apply to health care applications;
- Prepare and manage records according to HIPAA standards;
- Perform diagnosis- and procedure-coding accurately and efficiently;
- Demonstrate professional workplace habits, including punctuality, attitudes and behaviors excepted of the medical administrative secretary profession.

Program Specifics:
- All classes and labs are held on the Lowell campus at MCC’s Health, Science & Technology Center, located on Middle Street.
- Courses are offered in a variety of accelerated formats, including days or evenings and weekends.
- Students are responsible for the purchase of textbooks.
- Transportation to and from externships sites is NOT provided

In order for a student to be eligible to participate in an academic, community or clinical program that involves potential unsupervised contact with children, the disabled, the elderly, or other vulnerable populations, the student may be required to undergo a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check and/or a Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) check.

These skills are not conditions for admission to MCC programs, but do indicate abilities and characteristics necessary for the successful completion of college Health programs, and to perform the duties of the career upon graduation.
Admission Information:
Admission Prerequisites:
Current Reading Score of 68 on the college placement test . In addition, students must have successfully completed MAS 101- Medical Terminology at either the high school or college level and have current experience in a health field OR have permission of the program director.
Requirements After Admission:
Students must submit the Student Health Record form, provided by Middlesex Community College, to the Center for Health & Wellness. Required documentation of health status includes a completed physical examination, a Mantoux test for tuberculosis, and proof of immunization against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Tetanus/Diphtheria (within last ten years) and one lifetime dose of Tdap (after 2006), Hepatitis B and Varicella. Students born in the United States before January 1, 1957 will be considered immune to Measles, Mumps and Rubella and exempt from the MMR vaccine requirement. Students born in the United States before January 1, 1980 and enrolled in a health care program will not be considered immune to Varicella (chicken pox) and are not exempt from the Varicella requirement.
Students enrolled in the program must demonstrate a satisfactory level of performance in class and clinical settings in order to remain in the program.
