COM 127 - Introduction to Crisis Communications

This course will teach students how to evaluate high profile crises that negatively impact the reputation of celebrities, politicians, corporate brands and organizations and the tools and strategies needed to defend those being investigated or attacked by the news media, special interest groups or government officials. Topics that the course will cover include media relations, internal communications, social media, spokesperson media training, and the creation of a crisis communications and response plan and news conference.
Students will be able to:
- Conduct a vulnerability audit to identity potential challenges to an image and reputation crisis
- Develop a crisis communications plan and multidisciplinary team to address the event
- Using simulation, work with print, broadcast and social media reporters during a highly public and stressful event
- Issue timely and credible information to employees and other stakeholders
- Coach spokespeople on the tough questions they may be asked by the media during the crisis

Prerequisite(s): Eligible for ENG 101.
General Education Elective(s): Humanities
