Core Curriculum - General Education Requirements

All programs at MCC include a set of common - or core - requirements. These requirements enable students to explore their potential for learning and provide an educational context that promotes integrated learning. Such a foundation includes the ability to communicate effectively; to problem solve and think analytically; to observe and understand the physical and social world in which we live; to appreciate the nature of human creativity and cultures; and to develop the competencies valued in the workplace and community.

In order to ensure that students have many opportunities throughout their educational journey, Middlesex has identified the following skills and abilities as essential to our students’ learning and development. We provide a wide range of curricular and co-curricular learning opportunities for students to develop and practice them, and we assess student achievement of these Institutional Student Learning Outcomes (ISLOs) on an ongoing basis to ensure that our graduates are well-prepared for their future academic and career endeavors. The ISLOs are:

Written and Oral Communication  Social Responsibility
Multicultural and Global Literacy  Quantitative Literacy
Critical Thinking  Personal and Professional Development

The Core Curriculum consists of seven General Education courses that have been designated as MCC Core
Curriculum General Education courses.

Seven General Education courses include:

English Composition I
English Composition II: An Introduction to Literature

One elective from each of the following disciplines:

Humanities
Mathematics (above Algebra I)
Science
Social Science
Behavioral Science

Courses That Fulfill More Than One Core Requirement

Some interdisciplinary courses are made up of two separate three-credit courses (“clusters”) with a common theme. These paired cluster courses fulfill two General Education Core Curriculum requirements in two different disciplines, such as Science and Humanities, for a total of six credits (or seven credits, if the Science course includes a lab).

PLEASE NOTE: Associate degree students must complete the entire Core Curriculum in order to graduate. The Core Curriculum General Education course requirements are built into all associate degree programs. Waivers of the General Education requirements are not granted under any circumstance.

In addition, as of Fall 2014, in order to satisfy the MCC Core Curriculum General Education Requirements, courses must have been approved by the General Education Review Committee (GERC) to ensure that they explicitly include students’ demonstration of at least three Institutional Student Learning Outcomes (ISLOs). Students can check specific course descriptions to determine whether the course has been approved.
