Associate in Science Communication Career

Program Description:

The Communication Career Associate in Science degree program is designed to prepare students for direct workforce entry. This option provides a strong general communication background through practical application of digital media production tools and the study of communication history, theory, and ethics. Additionally,students expand their education by exposure to a wide variety of general elective coursework. Many people currently working in the field of communication choose the Communication Career degree program in an effort to expand their potential for growth in the business workforce.

Career and Transfer Outlook:

Upon completion of this program students are prepared to pursue many different communication careers in a variety of fields, including television, radio, film, digital media, journalism, public relations, and social media. Although not primarily intended as a transfer degree, some students do continue on to a bachelor’s degree program on a full- or part-time basis.

Helpful Hints:

Students should begin their Middlesex experience by taking the foundation-level courses (English and mathematics) along with COM 101-Mass Communication and COM 104-Foundations of Media Production. Internships in film production, television, radio, digital, print and social media are available through COM 223 - Communication Internship.

Program Outcomes:

Graduates of the Communication program are prepared to:

  • Develop and produce effective digital media productions.
  • Demonstrate technical competency using media productions tools and computer software.
  • Utilize standard academic grammar, punctuation, and writing conventions to produce coherent written work (in AP style when applicable).
  • Support the credibility of their work with accurate and detailed research. Evaluate and analyze information to determine its credibility. Substantively identify and analyze opportunities and challenges in a communication assignment.
  • Consider and apply media ethics in a variety of capacities, including written work, oral presentations, and productions.
  • Act professionally in accordance to communications industry standards in a variety of situations, including, but not limited to: interpersonal and group settings, electronic and digital communication, presentations, meetings, productions, and team-based settings.
  • Use the tools of communication and mass media to participate effectively in civic contexts and to contribute to meaningful dialogue about local, national, and global issues.
