Program Description:

The Energy Utility Technology Certificate is a nine-month program designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in the utility industry. The industry has forecast a strong need for new employees in the next several years for positions such as line workers, meter workers and substation maintenance personnel. The program includes courses that give students an introduction to the energy utility industry; knowledge of direct and alternating current circuits; generation, transmission and distribution of electricity; industrial safety; and computer applications. In addition, students will get hands-on experience at the National Grid training facilities in Millbury, Mass.

Career and Transfer Outlook:

Job opportunities nationwide include positions as maintenance and repair workers, electrical power line installers and repairers, first-line supervisors and managers, as well as overhead, underground and substation experts.

Helpful Hints:

Energy Utility Technology graduates can continue toward an associate degree and apply their credits from their certificate.

Program Outcomes:

Graduates of the Energy Utility Technology Certificate program are prepared to:

  • Apply electrical-circuit theory and principles of electrical-power generation, transmission and distribution systems;
  • Articulate additional electrical safety regulations and work procedures as apprentices in the electrical energy utility industry;
  • Communicate results, decisions and ideas verbally and in writing in a clear, concise manner;
  • Prepare clear and concise documentation of assignments and results;
  • Apply time-management techniques effectively;
  • Demonstrate problem solving by applying mathematical principles toward real technical problems.

Admission Information
Eligibility for MAT 080, Algebra II, a minimum reading score of 68, and concurrent enrollment in or completion of Basic Writing (ENG 071), or eligibility for ENG 101.

Note: The Energy Utility Technology program is supported by a Community-Based Job Training Grant received from the U.S. Department of Labor. In order to be eligible to participate in this program, students who are required by law must be registered with the U.S. Selective Service System and all students must be eligible to work in the United States. Individuals seeking employment at national Grid and other utility companies must also meet employer-specific hiring requirements. Individuals with serious driving and/or legal infractions should be aware that their actions may impact their employability.
