Program Description:
The Community Leadership Certificate offers students the opportunity to develop essential skills in leadership, communication, and advocacy. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical applications, students will gain insight into organizing community-based initiatives, advocating for social change, and engaging communities effectively.
The program incorporates coursework on leadership, ethics, American government, psychology, communication, community organizing and grassroots issues. Students will have the opportunity to apply these skills in an internship course, a DHE-funded internship at a Lowell non-profit organization (five paid internships offered per year) and through hands-on projects.

Additionally, the certificate will provide a solid foundation for students wishing to transfer to four-year institutions for degrees in Communications, Business, Public Administration, Pre-Law, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science and Health Sciences.
Helpful Hints:
Although PSY 128 and PSY 153 both require completion of PSY 101, students may choose one of the other courses in that choice block, such as ANT 101, SOC 101, or COM/SOC 143 to complete the certificate. Eligibility for ENG 101 is a requirement for some classes in this certificate.
Program Outcomes:
Graduates of the Community Leadership Certificate are prepared to:
- Identify community problems that students care about, demonstrating understanding of root causes and possible solutions.
- Demonstrate understanding of the field of community organizing including approaches, strategies, and the role of grassroots movements.
- Develop and apply the skills of effective communication, problem-solving, advocacy, and leadership.
- Reflect on and apply their values, concerns, and ethics toward working for the public good.
- Apply their understanding of race, class, gender, and ethnicity to their leadership and organizing efforts.
- Participate in practical experiences through a local internship and real-world projects which prepar them for leadership roles in nonprofit or local government sectors.
- Demonstrate cultural humanity when working with diverse individuals, families, and groups which will prepare them for leadership in their own or the Lowell, Massachusetts community.
