Visual Arts Associates Degree

Program Description:
Students in the A.S. Visual Arts program will have the opportunity to explore a range of mediums, including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, visual design, photography, and filmmaking while developing technical skills and creative problem-solving abilities.
In addition to developing artistic skills, the program provides a broad-based education in the history and theory of visual arts, helping students understand their context and evolution over time.
Career and Transfer Outlook:
The Visual Arts Associate of Science Degree prepares students to transfer into a Bachelor of Arts degree program in Visual Arts (including studio arts, photography, design, and media), Art History, or Art Education.
A visual art degree program prepares you for various career opportunities, including working as a professional artist, art educator, art therapist, art historian, curator, gallery or museum professional, art director, or illustrator, among others.
Helpful Hints:
Students interested in more intensive art or design instruction should consider one of the following degrees.
- The A.S. Studio Art degree prepares students to transfer into a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program in art.
- The A.S. Visual Design (Transfer) degree prepares students to transfer into a bachelor’s degree program in design.
- The A.S. Visual Design (Career) degree prepares students for direct workforce entry.
Program Outcomes:
- Proficiency in multiple visual arts mediums and techniques.
- Develop and apply critical thinking skills to analyze and interpret artwork and to articulate and defend their own artistic and design choices.
- Develop and apply creative problem-solving skills to complex artistic and design challenges.
- Develop a strong understanding of art history and theory, including the context and evolution of art over time, and an appreciation for art from different cultures and communities.
- Communicate ideas and artistic vision effectively, both through their artwork and through verbal and written communication.
- Create a portfolio of their work that showcases technical skills, artistic vision, and personal style.
- Behave ethically and professionally in accordance with the art and design industry standards.
