Associate in Science

Program Description:

The field of Public Health Informatics and Technology (PHIT) is focused on the business of collecting, storing, managing, analyzing, using and sharing public health data in order to more efficiently and effectively impact population health. Students who complete the three new PHIT courses will be eligible to obtain a micro credential from MCC. The transfer option is designed for students interested in transferring to a four-year institution with a direct articulation into the Bachelor of Science in Public Health, at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML).

Career and Transfer Outlook:

Students who complete the micro credential may be eligible to be employed in an entry-level public health informatics position. Students who complete the AS transfer option would be eligible to transfer to a 4-year institution (UML) to continue their studies in the Bachelor of Science in Public Health

Helpful Hints:

Most students in the Associate in Science, Liberal Studies, Concentration in Public Health Informatics program continue their studies toward a bachelor’s degree. Students should check the requirements of the transfer institution and meet with career and academic/transfer counselors at MCC for specific program planning.

BIO131 or placement test is required prior to registering for BIO231 A&P

Program Outcomes:

Graduates of the Associate in Science, Liberal Studies, Concentration in Public Health Informatics and Technology degree will achieve the outcomes of the Liberal Studies degree.  Additionally, graduates are prepared to:

  • Identify skills and knowledge necessary for an entry level PHIT worker
  • Apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills in PHIT environments;
  • Demonstrate professional and ethical work habits as they apply to health care environments;
  • Exhibit interpersonal and communication skills with patients, peers, other health care personnel, and the public;
  • Recognize the impact of different cultures in the healthcare environment
