Associate in Science, Liberal Studies

Jointly Offered by Middlesex Community College and
Minuteman Career & Technical High School

Program Description:

The Automotive Technology Associate in Science, Liberal Studies degree program prepares students to work in today’s highly automated repair shops and provides the background for career advancement in the automotive industry. Students get hands-on training and instruction in automotive repair and maintenance at Minuteman Career & Technical High School in Lexington, where they learn the requisite technical skills. Students take their general education courses at Middlesex to strengthen communications, computer and management competencies. The MCC associate degree credits for the automotive courses are awarded upon receipt of recommendations from Minuteman faculty. (This program is not approved for college financial aid. Please consult the Student Information Center for tuition and fees.) Students may begin their Middlesex coursework at any time. The coursework at Minuteman Career & Technical High School begins in the fall.

Career and Transfer Outlook:

Students who complete this program find work in the local automotive industry as automotive technicians. Career experience, and the general education and business courses will enable graduates to move into management positions or develop their own business.

Helpful Hints:

Automotive classes for first-year students are held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Minuteman Career & Technical High School. First-year students should plan on taking Middlesex classes on Tuesday and Thursday, or in the evening. First-year students are encouraged to take English, mathematics, or, if necessary, reading classes in their first semester.

Note: In order for a student to be eligible to participate in an academic, community or clinical program that involves potential unsupervised contact with children, the disabled, the elderly, or other vulnerable populations, the student may be required to undergo a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check and/or a Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) check.

Students must have a valid drivers license.

Program Outcomes:

Graduates of the Automotive Technology program will achieve the learning outcomes of the Liberal Studies degree.  Additionally, graduates are prepared to:

  • Work in an automotive repair shop;
  • Maintain automotive systems;
  • Describe the basic elements of a business operation;
  • Explain business management functions;
  • Use basic computer applications common in the business world.

 

Admission Note:

In order to take automotive classes, students must also apply directly to Minuteman Career & Technical High School.  A meeting with the program coordinator at Minuteman should be held as soon as possible.
