BIT 101 - The Accelerated Biotechnology Career Builder6
Course Description: This course will introduce students to the biotechnology industry and provide the critical skills needed to obtain an entry level position in this field. The course will begin by presenting standard job positions and familiarizing students with the typical work environment. Students will be introduced to the raw materials, including chemical, cellular biologics and microorganisms, commonly found in biotech companies. Application and use of standard laboratory equipment and storage options are introduced. Topics in quality control and good manufacturing practices (GMPs) will be presented and practiced in detail. Finally, professional development skills including resume building, job interviewing, and employment opportunities are discussed. Facility safety practices and identifying laboratory hazards (i.e., electrical, chemical, and biological) will be covered. The course includes a laboratory component where students practice topics covered in lecture in a state-of-the-art biotechnology facility. Labs include preparing solutions, protein assays, cell culture techniques, instrumentation operation and problem solving, environmental monitoring, and professional development skills. Prerequisite(s): High school diploma, GED, or equivalent; Must be at least 18 years of age Note(s): This course will be offered in Lowell with Hi-flex option - credit for this course will only be accepted into the Biotech AS degree at this time.
