PSY 167 - Psychology Internship Experience

3

Course Description: This internship-based course will help psychology students to both explore their potential interest in direct client work, as well as make connections between theoretical learning and real-world application of theory into practice.

Students will spend 1:15 hours each week engaged in classroom learning where they will develop practice skills relevant to placement, receive peer and instructor support and guidance, and have opportunities to reflect on connections they are making between coursework and internship.

Students will spend a minimum of 120 hours, over 15 weeks, engaged in an internship experience. They will have an identified supervisor from the organization who will provide guidance and oversight, and who will complete a mid-semester and final evaluation. During their time in placement, students will have opportunities to learn about different populations, shadow providers, and engage in client support and activities where appropriate.

Students will spend approximately 1-2 hours/week engaged in assignments outside of class with these primary purposes:

  1. To complete weekly reflection assignments designed to integrate feedback received from supervisors, clients, and instructors, as well as self-observations of strengths and areas for growth.
  2. To practice new skills through low stakes assignments.
  3. To apply major theories to direct practice.

Prerequisite(s): PSY 101 and at least one additional psychology elective, 15 credits in the program and a GPA of 2.0 or above.
General Education Elective(s): Behavioral Science
Note(s): Placements may require students to pass a CORI / SORI background check, immunizations, or other health requirements for certain placements
