LAN 285 - Latin 3 and Roman Culture

Latin 3 reviews and introduces all remaining grammatical concepts of classical Latin. Students will also read authentic Latin texts such as excerpts from Caesar, Pliny, Livy, Cicero, Catullus, Ovid, and Martial. The study of English derivatives from Latin stems and Roman culture will complement the study of the language.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:


- Analyze some linguistic concepts in Latin that do not exist in the English language.
- Apply, in their written and oral communication in Latin, linguistic concepts which do not exist in the English language.
- Read with fluency significant, authentic Latin texts such as Cicero’s Orations.
- Compare and contrast some key elements between their own cultures and Roman culture.
- Demonstrate growth in cultural sensitivity.
- Recognize that diversity encompasses diversity of many demographic variables, including race, religion, color, gender, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, age, education, and geographic origin.

Prerequisite(s): Completion of LAN 186 with a C- or better or placement by exam.
General Education Elective(s): Humanities
