EDU 102 - Guiding Children’s Behavior


Course Description: Positive guidance techniques for young children in educational and childcare settings will be examined. Class topics include theories of child development, current trends and research in child guidance, and standards and practices of early childhood education. Effective strategies for handling difficult behaviors, attention problems, challenging behaviors, and group classroom management are discussed.
Prerequisite(s): Completion of PSY 122.

Course Student Learning Outcomes:
  • Create two transition props and test their effectiveness assessing the pros and cons with a group of children while recording the number of children that liked/did not like the prop using a percentage value of the total class. 
  • Observe a teacher and name specific behavior management techniques used by the teacher during the observation and measure the effectiveness of those methods on a one to five scale- where 1 is not effective and 5 is very effective.
  • Define the terminology related to behavior management: positive reinforcement, redirection, negative reinforcement, punishment, consequences, active listening, modification, and role-play examples of three of the terms.
  • Observe, record and evaluate the frequency of challenging behavior exhibited by a child as well as reason why child misbehaves and formulate solutions to resolve the problem in a three-page paper.
