CRJ 121 - Contemporary Policing

Course Description: This course examines contemporary issues facing federal, state and local-law enforcement agencies. It includes an overview of police reforms, and the impact of new strategies on policy, programs, technology and management. Special attention is paid to philosophies and approaches in addressing crime and quality of life issues.  

 
Prerequisite(s): Eligible for ENG 101.

Course Student Learning Outcomes:
  •  Explain the historical origins and evolution of law enforcement in America.
  •   Explain the U.S. Constitution’s Bill of Rights Landmark Supreme Court cases and describe how it relates to the actions of law enforcement officers. 
  •   Describe and explain police and arrest, police and search and seizure, the warrant requirement, and custodial interrogation.
  •  Explain community policing, problem-solving policing, and evidence-based policing.
  •  Define and explain the police role, the specialized roles of police, patrol operations, and police discretion.
  •  Identify and explain the contemporary challenges of law enforcement including the hiring process, the police culture, minorities in policing, police ethics, investigations, homeland security, terrorism, and immigration.
