Associate in Science Communication Transfer

Students in the Associate in Science Communication Transfer degree program develop their creative, analytical, and technical skills through practical application of digital media production tools and the study of communication history, theory, and ethics. Additionally, students augment their learning while exploring other academic desciplines through the broad general education core curriculum. This program qualifies for the MassTransfer, which gaurantees credit transfer to Massachusetts state universities and the University of Massachusetts. Academic advisors and transfer counselors work closely with students to plan course selections in accordance with their intended bachelor’s degree major and transfer institution.
Career and Transfer Outlook:
Most students in the Communications Concentration continue their studies toward a bachelor’s degree. Students should check the requirements of the transfer institution and meet with career and academic/transfer counselors at MCC for specific program planning. Students may pursue careers in such fields as digital media, social media, journalism, public relations, film, television, and radio production.
Students should begin their Middlesex experience by taking the foundation-level courses (English and mathematics) along with COM 101 - Introduction to Communication Media and COM 104 - Foundations of Media Production. Internships in film production, television, radio, digital, print and social media are available through internship courses, COM 221, COM 222, and COM 223 as well as through independent study contracts.
Graduates of the Communications Concentration program are prepared to:
- Develop and produce effective digital media productions.
- Demonstrate technical competency using media productions tools and computer software.
- Utilize standard academic grammar, punctuation, and writing conventions to produce coherent written work (in AP style when applicable).
- Support the credibility of their work with accurate and detailed research.
- Evaluate and analyze information to determine its credibility.
- Substantively identy and analyze opportunities and challenges in a communication assignment.
- Consider and apply media ethics in a variety of capacities, including written work, oral presentations, and productions.
- Act professionally in accordance to communications industry standards in a variety of situations, including , but not limited to: interpersonal and group settings, electronic and digital communication, presentations, meetings, productions, and team-based settings.
- Use the tools of communication and mass media to participate effectively in civic contexts and to contribute to meningful dialogue about local, national, and global issues.
