Program Description:

The Chinese Studies Option of the Global Studies Concentration Associate in Arts, Liberal Arts and Sciences degree program offers an introductory understanding of historical and contemporary Chinese society with its increasing involvement in world affairs, as well as the opportunity to learn more about the philosophical, cultural and linguistic roots of that society. This option will prepare undergraduate students in any field for a global future in which the economic, political and social issues of China will have significant impact.

Career and Transfer Outlook:

The Global Studies Concentration/Chinese Studies Option is a well-rounded education program that provides students with great flexibility in their educational and career choices. Most students in the program continue their studies toward a bachelor’s degree program in global, international or peace studies, or any number of social science and related disciplines, such as history, political science, public policy or international business. This program qualifies for MassTransfer, which guarantees credit transfer to Massachusetts state universities and the University of Massachusetts. (This program is particularly well aligned with related programs at UMass Lowell.) Eventual career paths and employment positions can be found in international relations, diplomacy, foreign service, international business, law, education, politics and public policy, and with organizations and international institutions involved with for-profit activities, as well as civic and humanitarian operations and causes.

In addition, the Chinese Studies Option provides flexible job or career paths in the public, private and nonprofit sectors of tourism, journalism, the arts, translation and, in general, culture brokerage between China and the United States.

Helpful Hints:

Many bachelor’s degree programs require a world language sequence. These requirements can be completed before or after transfer.

Program Outcomes:

Graduates of the Global Studies Concentration/Chinese Studies Option degree program will achieve the learning outcomes of the Liberal Arts and Sciences degree. Additionally, graduates are prepared to:

  • Describe and analyze political, economic, business and cultural elements which influence relations of states and societies in their historical   and contemporary dimensions with regard to China
  • Articulate knowledge of cultural, social, economic, business, religious and linguistic differences between China and other cultures
  • Analyze specific international issues concerning China, illustrating the cultural, economic and political differences that affect their solution
  • Evaluate the impact of globalization on varying political, economic and societal situations as they concern China
  • Promote through words and actions understanding and integration of cultural differences in China and the world
  • Describe the value of commonalities and differences among human beings, and describe acquire expanded, broadened world views
  • Communicate effectively in the context of a diverse and rapidly changing culture
  • Demonstrate effective speaking, writing, reading and critical thinking
