EDU 101 - Curriculum In Early Childhood Programs

Course Description: This course will explore the creative experiences for young children through awareness of children’s individual interests, strengths and needs. Students will learn to plan and modify activities based on children’s individual needs, inclusion and the environment. Major areas to be explored are: English language arts, reading readiness, math, science, technology, history, social science, and health education. These major areas will be reflected in coursework and discussions based on the Massachusetts Department of Education Pre-K Standards and Experiences.
Prerequisite(s): Completion of PSY 122.

Course Student Learning Outcomes:
  • Design an individual curriculum unit for a chosen theme containing five ECE lesson plans for five different subject areas with curriculum samples for presentation in class.
  • Create a weekly overview of classroom learning centers in alignment with the Massachusetts Preschool Learning Experiences.
  • Develop a theme-based learning center in alignment with MA Preschool Guidelines that reflects developmentally appropriate practice within a specific age group.
  • Present an extended lesson plan detailing the content and teaching techniques applied in the lesson.
  • Plan a language and literacy unit and make/design a five pocket activity chart for a selected book.
  • Reflect and critique the professional development standards (EEC, NAEYC, QRIS, WIDA etc.) used in child care centers and public schools and demonstrate how the standards integrate with personal, workforce, and professional development goals
