EGR 102 - Introduction to Nano Engineering

4

This course will introduce basic concepts of nanotechnology. Various nano applications and processes will be explored. Topics such as Nanoscale measurement and principles of instrumentation, fundamentals of nanomaterials and nanoproducts, applications of Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) and nanoelectronic devices, analysis of nanomanufacturing with respect to Moore’s Law, nanomanufacturing techniques and the implication to product cost, quality and reliability, and the societal impact of fabricating nanoparticulates are included. Students will learn and apply basic nano-engineering terminology. Students will also write research papers based on class discussions. Employability skills such as critical thinking, communications and teamwork will be integrated into the course. As an alternative to in-class demonstrations of nanotechnology experiments, depending on availability and scheduling of area university nanotechnology labs, optional field trips may be required where the students conduct hands-on experiments. Students interested in engineering, life science, or physical science will find this course particularly interesting.

Prerequisite(s): Completion of ENG 101 and MAT 080. A grade of C or better in MAT 080 is strongly recommended.
